Cities With Amazing Theatre Other Than New York
Chris Peterson
Obviously for most theatre goers, the prime destination is Broadway. However, there are a number of strong theatre markets elsewhere. My job takes me all over the country and whenever I'm in a new city, I try to take in some theatre. I've been able to see some incredible pieces of work during my travels. So here some of the best cities to take in some amazing theatre.
Minneapolis
You might not think it, but Minneapolis for years has had an incredibly strong theatre market. They're home to the Orpheum Theatre, which I would put up as one of the most beautiful theatres in the country. Even better, most of the theatres in Minneapolis are owned by the Hennepin Theatre Trust which oversees the Orpheum, State, Pantages and New Century Theatres. Beyond these, when in town, I would check out what The Guthrie Theatre, Mixed Blood Theatre, Children's Theatre Company and Theater Latte Da have to offer.
Miami
I won't lie, I have a sentimental love for Miami. It's where my wife and I spent our honeymoon. But it's also the home to some really strong emerging theatre companies. I would recommend looking at the Miami Theater Center, Island City Stage, Adrienne Arsht Center, Actor's Playhouse and Gablestage. During this time of year, I might not have to twist your arm to head down there either.
Chicago
I could start and end this list by simply saying Chicago is home to the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, one of the most prolific companies in the country. But beyond that, the Windy City is home to some amazing theatres. I've had the chance to see productions at The Mercury Theatre, Theater's Wit, The Paramount Theatre, The Goodman Theatre, The Drury Lane Theatre and never have I been disappointed with what I saw.
Seattle
When I think of Seattle, theatre isn't the first thing that comes to mind, but it should. Because there are some incredible places to take in a show. If I were you, I would start with ACT Theatre. Then make sure to check out what's going on at, the Book-It Repertory Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Unexpected Productions, Harlequin Productions, Tacoma Little Theatre and of course the 5th Avenue Theatre. If you had any doubts about Seattle, this has been a prime location for out-of-town tryouts for shows such as Hairspray, Catch Me If You Can, Shrek and The Light in the Piazza.
There are obviously many other places that have wonderful theatre markets, such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston and Philadelphia. In any case, I will always urge you take in some theatre no matter where you go.
