Ten Sopranos that are Gifts to the World

Melody Nicolette

We’re doing a series that celebrates some of the very best voices for their vocal ranges, with a primary focus on (but not limited to!) theatre. Many will be well-known, while others you may not have heard of (until now). Hopefully, these lists will showcase a wide variety within the vocal classifications, to show there is no single way to create beautiful art!

Starting off, here are 10 sopranos that are glorious gifts to the world!

In no particular order:

Audra McDonald (CAROUSEL, PORGY AND BESS, PASSION)

All hail Queen Audra, winner of 6 Tony Awards.

Janis Kelly (SHOW BOAT, BRIGADOON,  and  A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, as well as countless operas. She originated the title role of Rufus Wainwright’s PRIMA DONNA.)

Jennie Sophia (SECRET GARDEN, BRIGADOON, MY FAIR LADY, LES MIZ)

Silverly and ethereal, Jennie Sophia possesses one of the finest sopranos in the world, most well-known for her work in the Chicagoland area.

Erin McIntyre (née Hasan*) (LOVE NEVER DIES, WICKED, A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER)

*She’s got several releases under this name which are on iTunes, and which you should go buy immediately

Alli Mauzey (WICKED, CRY BABY)

Lauren Worsham (BIG RIVER, CARNIVAL!, DOG DAYS (opera), A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER)

She also fronts the indie rock band Sky-Pony with her husband, Kyle Jarrow.

Charlotte Martin

Primarily a recording artist, Martin studied opera at Eastern Illinois University, and occasionally has classical-inspired tracks on her releases.

Anna Maria Alberghetti (CARNIVAL!, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, CAMELOT)

Harolyn Blackwell (PORGY AND BESS, CANDIDE, WEST SIDE STORY)

FKA twigs

twigs, like Martin, is primarily a recording artist, also choreographs and directs her own music videos.
