Ten Altos that are Gifts to the World
Melody Nicolette
We’re doing a series that celebrates some of the very best voices for their vocal ranges, with a primary focus on (but not limited to!) theatre. Many will be well-known, while others you may not have heard of (until now). Hopefully, these lists will showcase a wide variety within the vocal classifications, to show there is no single way to create beautiful art!
Here are 10 altos that are glorious gifts to the world!
In no particular order…
Queen Latifah (film version of CHICAGO and HAIRSPRAY)
Fiona Apple
Vienna Teng
BONUS: Vienna Teng has also co-wrote the musical THE FOURTH MESSENGER, and sang on the original cast recording. (It also completed a weeklong run at the New York Musical Festival in 2017, including multiple sold-out shows and received a lot of loving words from none other than Daveed Diggs!)
Christine McVie
Yvonne Elliman (JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR)
Keala Settle (HANDS ON A HARDBODY, LES MIZ, WAITRESS)
Pat Carroll
Angela Lansbury (MAME, SWEENEY TODD, THE KING AND I, HAMLET)
Bebe Neuwirth (ADDAMS FAMILY, CHICAGO)
Sheryl Lee Ralph (DREAMGIRLS, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, WICKED)
