It’s almost Valentine’s Day! The season of love filled with chocolates, flowers, hearts, teddy bears, and gooey romance... I can practically feel the cheesy social media posts in the air! And you know what that means? That’s right! It’s time for me to put on my comfiest pajamas, grab my most fattening snacks, and overanalyze couples from musical theatre productions instead of forming any sort of real relationship.

Musical theatre couples can be pretty messed up. Just look at Sweeney Todd! They fall in love and sing beautiful duets of romance and desire, but they also cheat, face villains, and overcome immense obstacles. Sometimes they even try to literally murder each other. Sure, most of the time, they end up happily ever after. But not always…

Let’s start with a simple one. If this is your favorite musical theatre couple you’re a little basic, but hey, you still made a good choice! They may be young and sometimes a bit silly, but Cosette and Marius face intense challenges and trauma together, and still manage to come out of it as a strong couple. You’re not afraid to admit that you like things that are popular and you’re also not afraid to root for love.

Ok, you are fantastic. You have a huge heart and you love so deeply! You care a lot about the people who are close to you and you have a kind of genuine optimism that the rest of us wish we had. I’m sorry this couple has such a sad ending, because you definitely don’t deserve it and neither did they.

Orpheus and Eurydice from Hadestown

Did you go through an emo phase? Maybe you were a little goth? Or into steampunk? I just get the feeling that you probably cry a lot. Still, you’re definitely a determined person who doesn’t give up. And even though this story doesn’t end happily, you’re still going to listen to the soundtrack on repeat and wish for a different result every time.
