Community Theater Was Basically My High School Sport

Spotify just made me a “summer jams” playlist based on my listening habits that includes, no joke, the entr’acte from “Pippin”, so it probably won't surprise you to learn that I didn’t participate in sports as a child. Like, at all. 

However, I don't think I'm any worse off for fulfilling this nerd stereotype, because my high school sport was community theater. Every value and life skill that kids get from team athletics, I got from the stage.

Being Immersed In Theater Can Change Your World

In the year 1972, for the first time in my life I found myself immersed in theater, both as an acting student and two as an actor in the Traveling Theater of Rockland county.  Admittedly I was a shy boy of 15 years old and had never had an experience where out of  necessity to survive the traveling group, I was literally shaken out of my shell.  I remember thinking about the joy I felt when the audiences laughed or applauded, as well as the young ladies who were enamored by who they perceived me to be. Pretty powerful stuff for a 15 year old.

Is My "Theatre Nerdiness" Showing? Good

When asked the best way to describe who I am, I used to hesitate because, in all honestly, I am a theater nerd, but was never sure if that is something I wanted to tell someone I just met. But why should I hide that? Theater is my whole life and sometimes I feel that it is all that I talk about. Theater is not just what I do, it is who I am.
