Ten MORE Mezzos That Are Gifts To the World
Melody Nicolette
We’re doing another series that celebrates some of the very best voices for their vocal ranges, with a primary focus on (but not limited to!) theatre. Many will be well-known, while others you may not have heard of (until now). Your faves might not make the list, but here are some that deserve some love, too! Hopefully, these lists will showcase a wide variety within the vocal classifications, to show there is no single way to create beautiful art!
Here are 10 MORE mezzos that are glorious gifts to the world!
In no particular order:
Carrie Hope Fletcher (LES MIZ, CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG, ADDAMS FAMILY)
Florence Welch
Linzi Hateley (LES MIZ, SECRET GARDEN, CARRIE, MAMMA MIA, MARY POPPINS)
Susan Egan (BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, CABARET, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE)
Tori Amos (in musicals in high school, specifically GYPSY; wrote THE LIGHT PRINCESS)
Samantha Barks (LES MIZ, CABARET, OLIVER!, THE LAST FIVE YEARS)
Beyoncé
Alexia Khadime (WICKED, LION KING, BOOK OF MORMON)
Pearl Bailey (HELLO DOLLY!, HOUSE OF FLOWERS, CALL ME MADAM)
An amazing mezzo belter with a killer lower register.
Selena
Our last mezzo list ended with Donna Summer, and as Selena was hugely influence by Donna, it is only fitting to close with Selena. I try to keep these lists to living people, but we can’t talk about the best voices of all time without talking about Selena. The jury is still out on whether or not she was a mezzo or soprano, because she died so young and her voice never allowed to fully develop. Her G#5 was just starting to come into its own at the time of her death. (She had no formal training and already had a voice like that as a child.) She really was nothing short of a gift. Te queremos, Selena.
