My Favorite Covers of Musical Theatre Classics by Contemporary Artists
Melody Nicolette
First up: Here’s a fun collection of some of our favourite artists covering the musical theatre greats. It’s not meant to be a comprehensive list; not everyone’s faves are going to be on it. Not everyone is going to make every list every time. This isn’t a list of the “best,” it’s just that: a mixed tape. Also excluded were more recent folks from the theatre community covering theatre songs.
Without further ado, here we go! :)
My Favorite Things (SOUND OF MUSIC)- Tori Amos
I Don’t Care Much (CABARET)- Emilie Autumn
Almost Like Being in Love (BRIGADOON)- Nat King Cole
Trust in Me (The Jungle Book)- Siouxsie & the Banshees
Think of Me (PHANTOM OF THE OPERA)- Jennifer Michelle Greenberg (formally Grassman)
Mack the Knife (THREEAPENNY OPERA*)- Bobby Darin
(*you learn something new everyday; I didn’t realize this was from Threeapenny Opera...mostly because I just associated it with this.)
Lucky Be a Lady (GUYS AND DOLLS)- Seal
(a nice change up from the Sinatra version, I think!)
They Call the Wind Maria (PAINT YOUR WAGON)- Sam Cooke
(Elated that he recorded this, devastated he didn’t record more Lerner & Loewe. Sam Cooke singing “Come to Me, Bend to Me?” COME ON!)
