Broadway's 'Beetlejuice' to close on Jan 8th

It’s been reported that Broadway’s ‘Beetlejuice’ will take its final bow at the Marquis Theatre on January 8, 2023. It performed at the venue on April 8, after its original run at the Winter Garden Theatre. At the time of its. closing in January, this staging of Beetlejuice will have played 313 regular performances.

The cast includes Alex Brightman reprising his Tony-nominated performance in the title role ad well as fellow original cast members Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer as Delia, Adam Dannheisser as Charles, Kerry Butler as Barbara, David Josefsberg as Adam, Kelvin Moon Loh as Otho, Danny Rutigliano as Maxie Dean and Dana Steingold as the Girl Scout. Cast members new to this staging include Elizabeth Teeter as Lydia, Michelle Aravena as Miss Argentina and Zonya Love as Maxine Dean/Juno. The ensemble features Kate Bailey, Will Blum, Ryan Breslin, Natalie Charle Ellis, Brooke Engen, Eric Anthony Johnson, Andrew Kober, Elliott Mattox, Mateo Melendez, Ramone Owens, Commodore C. Primous III, Nevada Riley and Graham Stevens.

The story concerns a deceased couple who try to haunt the new inhabitants of their former home and call for help from a devious bio-exorcist ghost named Betelgeuse (pronounced "Beetlejuice"), who is summoned by saying his name three times. One of the new inhabitants is a young girl, Lydia, who is dealing with her mother's death and her neglectful father.

Sara Holdren, in New York Vulture, wrote that the show "openly embraces the theme park-y aspects of an enterprise like the one it's engaged in. True to its source material, it's loud, it's cheeky, and it's all about excess. It's also – thanks in large part to Alex Brightman's spot-on performance as the incorrigible titular ghoul – a pretty fun time."

The musical, based on the 1988 Tim Burton film of the same name, is directed by Alex Timbers and features an original score by Eddie Perfect and a book by Scott Brown and Anthony King. Beetlejuice received eight 2019 Tony Award nominations, including one for Best Musical.

A touring production will launch on December 6th in San Francisco and then travel to 26 cities in its first year. Casting for the tour is to be announced.
