'Frog and Toad' lead actor abruptly quits, calls production a "nightmare"
Last week, a production of "A Year with Frog and Toad" found itself in a difficult situation when the show’s lead actor suddenly quit as the show’s run began. Jay Goede, who was cast as “Frog”, called the Children's Theater Company’s (CTC) production of the Robert and Willie Reale musical, a “literal disaster” and seemingly blamed the show’s director.
Goede, who originated the role in the 2002 Broadway production, said the following in a scathing Facebook post,
“For anyone who cares I have officially left the production of "Frog and Toad" at the Children's Theater Company, which was for me a literal disaster. Don't try to revisit things you did in the past that you're really proud of and that we're magical, let them remain cherished memories. Because this was a nightmare of an experience, from the first day of rehearsal. The cast was delightful: four of the most talented actors I've ever had a chance to work with. The artistic staff and crew: all brilliant professionals! The director? ................
If you have tickets for the show and you're going to see me please try to call and get your money back. That's all the advice I can offer you. Take care, for all you who loved and supported me. And may we never run into each other again for those who didn't. May you always "look funny in a bathing suit!"“
Goede posted the message on April 25th, two days after the show’s opening night.
The director, Peter Brosius, is the current and outgoing artistic director of CTC. After 27 years in the role, Brosius is due to step down June 30th. Brosius took the helm of CTC in 1997 and has since produced more than 187 productions, including more than 70 new commissioned works.
Brosius was also at the helm during a controversial fallout period stemming from sexual assault allegations at the theatre. He was part of the decision to go after an abuse survivor to recoup court costs in a civil case.
This is a developing story and will be updated with new information as if becomes available.
