Do you miss hearing stage manager calls? A New York SM has got you covered
I miss everything about theatre right now. I miss going to see a show, being in a show, the big moments and the small details. One of the things I didn’t know how much I missed until I heard it were the stage manager pre-show calls.
Thankfully, a Broadway stage manager has provided us with a wonderful peek back into normalcy.
Cherie B. Tay has had quite a career in stage management. She’s worked on Broadway shows such as Amélie(SM) and Hadestown(ASM) as well as productions with the New York City Ballet and The Public Theater. She’s also an accomplished voice-over actor who’s lent her voice to live events, audio dramas, podcasts, and more.
In a video posted to Youtube, she combines both skillsets for something that may bring many of you piece of mind in a way you might not have needed. She goes through her pre-show calls. It includes giving minute warning to actors, checking in with the conductor, and banter with the sound person.
It’s chill-inducing for those who normally hear this before shows. I found myself surprisingly get emotional at the end when she said “Go.”
