"Ted Lasso" is the New "Schitt’s Creek"

Are you like me? Did you bawl your eyes out watching the end of Schitt’s Creek? Not only was the story that finished out Schitt’s Creek beautiful and funny in every way, but it was also incredibly emotional because we were all saying goodbye to one of the best shows of the past decade (in my humble opinion).

Schitt’s Creek, created by the comedy genius of Eugene and Dan Levy, has been such an important show to so many because of the pure joy it exudes. Every time you watched it, you were swept away to a world where it didn’t matter what you looked like, how you acted, or who you loved; everyone saw the good in each other. It was a world we all desperately wanted to escape to as our own real-world was becoming increasingly more volatile.

So, when it ended, I think many of its fans wondered, “where can I escape to now?”. Well, I am happy to report. I think there is a new show with a world we can all escape to once again.

Ted Lasso is the answer to all our prayers. The titular character, played by Jason Sudeikis, originally started out as a promo character after NBC Sports acquired the rights to show English Premier League football. The character was a southern gentleman who was an American football coach; they were now making an English football coach. It’s a funny premise for a promo, but a whole tv show? I’ll admit, when I heard it was being made into a tv show and saw the previews, I was very skeptical. I’m a fan of Sudeikis (and Premier League football), so when it came out, I gave it a shot.

I was very pleasantly surprised! The first episode grabbed me immediately with its humor, and by the last episode of the season, it grabbed me with its Schitt’s Creek-like heart.

Ted Lasso the show, just like the promos, follows American football coach Ted Lasso and his move to coach an English football team. Having no knowledge of the game or how anything works in England, Lasso is forced to rely on his good heart and his belief in humankind to get him through. The football players and owners of the football team are all quite cynical at the start. But with each episode, you come to realize they are all excellent people; they’ve just had a rough go of it. It sounds a bit like the Rose’s, don’t you think?

Ted Lasso, much like Schitt’s Creek, invites you into a world where everyone is truly good, and everyone has love to give. You can be honest and authentically yourself, and the people around you will still love you unconditionally. They are both shows about human decency. Not to mention that both shows are absolutely hilarious! So, if you’re looking for a new show that makes you laugh and gives you all the warm feelings of Schitt’s Creek, look no further than Ted Lasso.   

The really good news is that you can watch both shows right now! At the same time if you want! You can now watch all six seasons of Schitt’s Creek on Netflix and the first season of Ted Lasso on AppleTV+. If you do get hooked on Ted Lasso and finish the first season too soon (as I did), not to fear, production on season two starts soon, and a third season has already been ordered. Happy watching!
