Enlightened Entertainment Finding Life Lessons in Movies & Television - "Emma" (2020)

  • Dr. Sara Frawley

The first full-length film by Autumn de Wilde, an adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma, is filled with spectacular scenery, music, and characters to remind us of the lighter and darker sides of love and matchmaking.

Conflict Makes Us Better People

The movie starts by reminding us that the main character, Emma, has “lived 21 years without anything to vex her.” While conflict is uncomfortable and sometimes painful, it opens our eyes to new ideas. It teaches us to listen, to be flexible, and to learn more about who we truly are.

The Art of Matchmaking (Or Should You Really Set Up Your Friends?)

In the not too distant past, just like in Emma, people were matched up by their friends, families or even matchmakers. We have moved away from this tradition. With the use of dating apps on the rise, along with the divorce rate, I question whether these are the best methods to meet our partners. The global divorce rate for arranged marriages is 6%. And while I might not agree with the reasoning of these marriages in certain cultures, it makes you think.

Now, I’m not saying that we should arrange marriages for everyone, but being single in today’s day and age is tough. Everyone is too busy staring at their phones to make eye contact, let alone start up a conversation. So if you know someone in your life looking for a companion, keep them in mind when you meet someone new.

True Love is Challenging

Love is not simple. Anyone in a relationship will tell you that it can be extremely challenging at times. I’m a true believer that a life partner should not only challenge you, but they should be able to without causing conflict. A good partner stands up to you when you are wrong (in a kind and loving way, of course). It is important to hear them out without defensiveness. As going on the defense is a sure-fire way to create contempt and ruin a relationship.

The Best People See The Best In Us

The “Law of Attraction” speaks on the idea that when we hold people in their best light, they will be that way. There is nothing better than a person who never judges us and holds us in high regard even we’re being a bit of an a$$h*le.

Today, decide to be that person for someone else. Hold them up. Love them for who they are. They might just surprise you.
