‘Hadestown’ to reopen on Broadway on September 2
For those anxiously awaiting the reopening of the Broadway industry will be given an early gift as ‘Hadestown’ producers have announced it will resume performances on September 2nd, almost two weeks before the majority of shows reopen in New York City.
“One of the themes of the show is imagining how the world could be, and we think it’s important to bring that hope and optimism to Broadway in this moment,” said Mara Isaacs, one of the show’s lead producers.
According to reports, the early relaunch is due to the timing of the ‘Hadestown’ touring production schedule: The North American tour of ‘Hadestown’ will kick off on Friday, October 15, at Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center for a four-week engagement and continue to over 30 cities in its first season. Prior to the Kennedy Center run, the tour will have a week-long stop at Greenville, South Carolina’s Peace Center beginning October 5.
Hadestown intertwines two mythic tales—that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone—as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith and fear against love.
“Hadestown” won the 2019 Tony Award for Best Musical and won the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. It returns to the Walter Kerr Theatre, where it opened on April 17, 2019.
