"Lead, Discover, and Create with Love and Curiosity." - Chatting with Members of the Choir's Jason Brown!
I would like you to meet Jason Brown. Jason was recently seen in Members of the Choir at The Chain Theatre written by Evan Edwards and directed by Rick Hamilton. A true seasoned actor, Jason has performed for many years for wonderful companies such as The New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW), The Shakes Theater of NJ, The Red Bull Theatre, Pioneer Theatre, A.R.T., Queens Theatre in the Park, Playwright Horizons, and Moscow Art Theatre just to name a few. Jason holds an MFA in Acting from A.R.T Institute for Advanced Theatre Training. I am so grateful to feature such an amazing artist!
How old were you when you knew you wanted a career in the performing arts?
I was 6 years old.
Where did you study? Are there any mentors who helped shape you into the artist you are today?
I had a theatre professor who really championed for me in undergrad named Alma Becker. The Artistic Director of my graduate program, Robert Woodruff, and the actors Bill Camp and Michael Potts have been inspirations to me as well.
Congratulations on Members of the Choir! Evan Edwards is a true gem in this industry, and it is so exciting to see new works come to light like this. What about Members of the Choir excited you?
It's gay, and it's black, and both of those characteristics are extremely exciting to me. Seeing gay, black characters loving, laughing, and living onstage as three-dimensional, fully fleshed-out human beings is a revolutionary act we need to see more of in abundance.
You have worked all over the world. Are there any shows, performances, or moments in your wonderful career that stick out and are near and dear to your heart?
I really didn’t know I had the capacity to write until I worked with Classical Theatre of Harlem; playing Dionysus in their production of The Bacchae is definitely a major highlight of my career and really challenged my growth as an artist.
What advice would you give any young aspiring artist?
Lead, discover and create with love and curiosity.
