By. Kevin Ray Johnson (Staff Writer for OnStage Blog)
I would like you to meet the one and only Rawle D. Lewis! Rawle is an Actor and Comedian best known for playing Junior Bevil in Cool Runnings in 1993. At 17 years old he moved to LA to pursue a career in Acting and Comedy. Other credits for him include appearing on Television in Malcolm and Eddie, MacGyver, Life in Pieces, and Our Flag Means Death, just to name a few. He has also written and produced for films and is the host of the Stop Drop and Rawle Podcast!
"Go Get Your Palace" are words I truly live by. For me it means that if you want it and work hard for it anything is possible. I first remember hearing these words as a young kid and being so inspired. I am so honored to be featuring the amazing actor (who is truly a bad-a** mother who don't take no crap off of nobody) that said those words in my series!
How old were you when you knew you wanted to be an Actor?
I first fell in love with acting at 9 years old. My mother was doing a public access cable show in NJ. During the holiday season, they had all the children of the Broadcasters do a segment wishing all the viewers safe and happy holidays. I memorized a 30-sec soliloquy and delivered it to a New Jersey television audience. I was hooked. I felt like a fish in water when I was delivering those lines.
Are there any mentors or anyone that truly helped mold and advise you along the way?
As far as mentors, I must truly say that having a core group of friends that believed in me at my talents has helped me immensely. These are not necessary individuals in show business but they are in the Rawle D. Lewis moral support, business.
Cool Runnings has truly become a timeless classic that many (myself included) grew up on. I truly live by one of your lines in the movie in "Go Get Your Palace!". What memories do you have of being a part of that experience playing Junior Bevil?
There is real truth in the idiom “Be Careful What You Wish For” because I can remember thinking to myself as a young actor. I would love to be in a positive movie or project, one that inspires people. Even after booking a role in “Cool Runnings” It hadn’t exactly hit me yet that I had accomplished my goal. Well, until a few weeks later, I was shooting and my character “Junior” tells the character “Yul Brenner” to “Go get your palace”. At that moment I realize that my goal was realized.
Are there any other fond moments in your career that stick out that are near and dear to your heart?
I think “Cool Runnings” has thus far been the most memorable project I have worked on in the eyes of fans of my work. Nonetheless, that does not bother me. It is an amazing project to have been a part of. I am grateful to still be making a living at what I love doing most in life. So, the memories that are dear to me are currently being made.
What advice would you give any young artist chasing their dream?
Dreams are whispers from the Gods reminding you who you really are and what you came here for. Sometimes we think of ourselves as chasing a dream but our dreams are the ones that are chasing us, constantly reminding us what we came here to do. My advice would be to listen to the advice of your heart. No one knows better than you who you really are.
