By. Kevin Ray Johnson (Staff Writer for OnStage Blog)
WELCOME TO THE SHOW TO THE HISTOREMIX!
It is such an honor to introduce you to Cecilia Snow! Cecilia will be performing as an Alternate and serving as Dance Captain in the Boleyn Tour of Six! Cecilia's credits include Sweeney Todd, alongside Ben Davis and Carmen Cuzackat The Muny, Ragtime (Sarah), A Christmas Story (Miss Shields), Songs for a New World (Woman 1), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Florika/ Dance Captain), Footloose (Urleen), and Hercules (Muse). Cecilia was featured in the ensemble and understudied Sarah in the national tour of Ragtimedirected by Marcia Milgrom Dodge. Since then, she has toured Japan with Disney on Classic and performed as Nicki Marron in the US Regional premiere of The Bodyguard, starring American Idols' Latoya London.
I cannot express how appreciative I am that such a talented artist took the time, especially with how busy her schedule must be at the moment, especially learning such a fun and fast-paced show. The sky is truly the limit for Cecilia!
How old were you when you knew you wanted to be an Actress?
I was probably about 4. I remember watching clips of the A Chorus Line movie and Bye Bye Birdie at my Grandma’s house and wanting to do that. I was taking dance classes then, so I loved the big musical numbers. I loved the idea of portraying another person and telling their story. It brought me so much joy, and I loved how much joy it brought to others. Singing in the Rain was and is still a favorite of mine. I've always loved “Moses Supposes.” At one point, I even knew all the choreography. Who knows? I still might!
Where did you study? Are there any mentors that helped make you the Amazing Performer you are today?
I went to The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. I originally went for Music Education, but after two years, I changed my major to Music Performance. I liked the idea of teaching, but I wasn’t good at it, and it wasn’t my true love. My voice teacher, Dr. Deborah Massell, supported my decision and helped me get through college. At the time, I was studying classical music and battling depression. I was struggling through my classes, and I didn’t have a lot of professors who supported me, but Dr. Massell really helped guide me through it all. She was patient, loving, and so kind through every lesson. She taught me the importance of healthy techniques and really helped me find my sound. She met me where I was instead of trying to change me, and I was able to graduate because of her. I’ll always be grateful for her.
I also had phenomenal dance teachers growing up. Danielle Cuzdey and Barbara Pregont at The World of Dance in Albany, NY really helped shape me as a dancer. Especially after being a dance captain a few times, I can see how much they really influenced me.
Congratulations onSix. This is truly one of my favorite Musicals to come out in years. How has the process been for you?
Thank you so much! Wow, this process has been tough but so rewarding! I’ll be honest. My body aches, and about halfway through the rehearsal day my brain turns to mush, but it’s been so wonderful. We have an incredibly supportive creative team that gives us a safe space to explore and make mistakes. They've been so gracious and loving; I feel so cared for. It’s such an incredible show to be a part of, and then to work with these fantastic people, I couldn’t ask for anything more.
Are there any other shows, performances, or moments in your career that will always stick out and be near and dear to your heart?
Yes! I toured Japan with Disney on Classic, which will forever be the greatest thing I’ve ever done. We had the opportunity to sing all Disney music with the Orchestra Japan for four months, and we had such a great time. There were eight American singers, and we all became very close through the process. It was magical, and the people of Japan were so kind and loving. They got to know us, embraced us, and were so patient as we learned Japanese. They especially loved our Hercules set in act 2. It was such a blessing, and I’m so honored to have been a part of it.
Also, I played Nicki in The Bodyguard over at White Plains Performing Arts Center, and I’ll never forget it. Not only do I love that theater and the people who work there, but if there’s ever a chance to sing Whitney Houston music, I’ll do it!
What advice would you give any young artist who would like a career in the performing arts?
When I started telling people I wanted to be a performer, I had a lot of naysayers. So, I’d tell young artists that if performing is what you want to do, go do it. Don’t let anyone stop you or try to discourage you from doing it. Find a way that works best for you and give it your all. That said, if you reach a point where performing doesn’t bring you joy anymore, it’s ok to leave. You deserve to be doing what you love.
