On June 13th at 7 pm, actress Zully Ramos will be hosting a live cabaret on her Youtube channel. The event, titled '“Human Heart”, is aiming to raise money for local theatres in Connecticut as well as the Broadway Advocacy Coalition. In addition to Ms. Ramos(whose credits include RENT, Ragtime, and Something Rotten!), it features some of the best talents in the area. Ms. Ramos talked to us about the cabaret and the messages she hoped it conveys.

Give me a quick description of this event:

This cabaret is meant for my friends and me to have fun, share our experiences during this quarantine and to showcase the many different formats in which we can share our talents through song all while raising money for some of our favorite organizations.

Why did you choose this medium?

I chose this platform as a way to be able to creatively express myself in ways that I have not usually been able to. For example, I’ve done many shows and been a part of so many theatre experiences but not always do I get the opportunity to really work on my craft in a way that I know I can. And since COVID 19, so many artists have been expressing themselves through virtual classes or virtual cabarets and I said, why not?

Who is the fundraising for?

This fundraiser is for the local theatre’s I have had the pleasure to work with and also for the Broadway Advocacy Coalition which is bringing to light the need to have more people of color a part of Broadway. For so long, people of color, especially Blacks, were not given the same opportunity and it is time that we say enough, and give us the space we need to see us as the next upcoming Tony star, director, writer, etc.

What’s the message you’re hoping to get across during the evening?

To cherish and appreciate all those around you no matter where they come from, no matter the differences, no matter what they look like and to understand that we are here to fight, rise up and shine like the way we were meant to. That includes actors and dancers who are also not as physically fit, as is portrayed, as the norm.

Tell us about your friends joining you!

I’ve had the pleasure to work with all of the performers on many different occasions. Some of them since high school! I cannot wait to show everyone just how talented each of them is in their own skin, with their own voices.

How do you feel about where theater might go after quarantine?

I hope the theatre experience comes back stronger than ever. I hope the community is able to understand and celebrate everyone, especially people of color in a way that I believe we truly can IF WE all come together. Being true to yourself, appreciating your own skin, your body is the most beautiful way of expressing your soul through whatever talent you have. Let’s raise our voices. Together we can make a difference. Together, WE WILL make a difference.

The event can be viewed on Ms. Ramos’ Youtube page as well on Facebook.
